Dog Heat Cycle Calculator
Estimate rough stage windows and a next-heat window from typical canine averages. This tool is educational only — it cannot determine the exact fertile period or prevent pregnancy.

Quick answer
Enter the first day of visible heat (and optionally a typical interval or previous heat date) to see illustrative stage windows based on average lengths: proestrus ~days 1–9 and estrus ~days 10–18 from heat start, plus a rough visible-heat note of about 2–3 weeks.
These averages come from common veterinary teaching figures (Merck averages near 9 days each for proestrus and estrus). Individual dogs differ widely — ranges span days to weeks.

Interactive heat-cycle estimator
Starts with today’s date as a default. Change the first day of visible heat to match your dog. Outputs use illustrative averages — not a fertility prediction.
Default estimate for this start date
Proestrus
Sep 26, 2026 – Oct 4, 2026
≈ days 1–9 · bloody discharge often starts here; usually not receptive yet
Estrus
Oct 5, 2026 – Oct 13, 2026
≈ days 10–18 · may still be fertile even if bleeding lightens
Visible heat (rough)
Through ~ Oct 16, 2026
About 2–3 weeks from start · real dogs vary from days to weeks per stage
Estimated next heat
Apr 26, 2027
Based on your typical interval of 7 months. Plus or minus weeks is common in real dogs.
One next-heat estimate is shown. Add a valid previous heat date (before the current start) to switch from the month-interval default to your dog’s prior spacing.
No exact fertile day is claimed. Hormone testing and vaginal cytology by a veterinarian are required when breeding or contraception timing must be precise.
How these estimates work
The calculator applies illustrative averages, not individualized prediction:
- Proestrus window: about days 1–9 from the first day of visible heat
- Estrus window: about days 10–18 from heat start
- Visible heat (rough): often about 2–3 weeks, with a wide real-world range
- Next heat: heat start + your typical interval in months (default 7, allowed 4–13), matching Merck’s common interval framing
What this calculator cannot do
It does not output an exact fertile day as certainty. It does not prevent pregnancy. It does not replace progesterone testing, LH timing, or vaginal cytology. Ovulation timing relative to the LH peak still requires veterinary diagnostics when breeding management matters.

Frequently asked questions
Can this calculator tell me the exact fertile days?+
No. Fertile timing is individual. Veterinarians use hormone testing and cytology when precise timing is needed. This tool only shows illustrative average stage windows.
Does using the calculator prevent pregnancy?+
No. It makes no contraception claims and cannot prevent pregnancy. Keep intact females separated from males and consult a veterinarian for contraception or mismating advice.
Why is the default interval 7 months?+
Merck describes interestrus intervals commonly between 4 and 13 months with an average near 7 months. Adjust the input if your dog’s history differs.
Should I rely on this for breeding?+
No. Breeding decisions require veterinary guidance. Use this page only for educational orientation alongside the heat-cycle article.
