Example result: mated Oct 1, 2026. Enter your date above for your dog.
Estimated due date
Thu, Dec 3, 2026
Most likely whelping window: Nov 28, 2026 – Dec 8, 2026 (published normal range from mating runs to Dec 12, 2026).
Based on mating date Oct 1, 2026: day 63 estimate, days 58–68 window.
Moderate accuracy (±5 days)
A single mating date is only a rough guide: sperm can survive about a week, so conception may happen days after mating. How accurate is this?
Your milestone calendar
Oct 22, 2026 – Oct 29, 2026
Abdominal palpation possible
An experienced vet may feel early fetal swellings. Accuracy depends on skill and body condition.
Oct 26, 2026 – Nov 5, 2026
Ultrasound pregnancy confirmation
Confirms pregnancy and fetal heartbeats. Litter counts from ultrasound are often inaccurate.
Oct 31, 2026 – Nov 5, 2026
Relaxin blood test window
A blood test for relaxin, a hormone made by the placenta, can confirm pregnancy.
Nov 15, 2026
Puppy skeletons visible on X-ray
Fetal bones mineralize from about day 45, so radiographs can confirm pregnancy.
Nov 19, 2026 – Nov 26, 2026
Set up the whelping box
Place it in a quiet, warm area and let her sleep in it so it feels familiar before labor.
Nov 25, 2026
X-ray puppy count
Counting skulls and spines is most reliable from about day 55, so you know how many puppies to expect.
Nov 26, 2026
Start checking rectal temperature
Check twice daily. A drop below about 99°F (37.2°C) usually means labor is likely within roughly 24 hours.
Nov 28, 2026 – Dec 8, 2026
Whelping window
Watch for nesting, panting, shivering and loss of appetite after her temperature drops.
Call your vet if labor has not started by Thu, Dec 10, 2026, or at any time if she strains hard for 30–60 minutes without a puppy, has green discharge before the first puppy, or seems weak or unwell.

Quick answer
Dogs are pregnant for about 63 days (9 weeks). To estimate a dog’s due date, add 63 days to the mating date. Because conception can happen days after mating, most dogs give birth between day 58 and day 68, and a few as late as day 72.
If your vet confirmed ovulation with progesterone testing, the estimate is much tighter: 63 days ± 1. From the LH surge, add 65 days.
Use the calculator above for your dog’s dates, accuracy level, milestone calendar and a printable week-by-week PDF. For the full background, read how long dogs are pregnant.
How long are dogs pregnant?
Dogs are pregnant for about 63 days (9 weeks) counted from ovulation. Counted from the mating date, a normal pregnancy lasts 58 to 68 days in most dogs and up to 72 days in some, because sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for about a week before the eggs are ready.
Gestation length from ovulation vs mating
Canine gestation is very consistent when timed from hormones, but not from mating. The AKC and Merck Veterinary Manual give these ranges:
- From ovulation: 63 days on average (62–64)
- From the LH surge or first progesterone rise: 64–66 days
- From the first mating: 58–72 days
How to calculate a dog’s due date
The standard dog due date formula is:
Due date = mating date + 63 days (most likely window: day 58 to day 68)
- Choose the date you know: the mating date, or a vet-confirmed ovulation, LH surge, or progesterone rise date.
- Add 63 days to a mating or ovulation date, or 65 days to an LH surge or progesterone rise date, to get the estimated due date.
- Mark the whelping window: days 58–68 after mating (62–64 after ovulation, 64–66 after the LH surge).
- Plan vet checks: ultrasound around days 25–35, an X-ray puppy count from about day 55, and a call to your vet if there is no labor by day 70 after mating.
Worked example
A dog mated on October 1, 2026 has an estimated due date of December 3, 2026 (October 1 + 63 days). Her most likely whelping window is November 28 – December 8. If she has not started labor by December 10 (day 70), call the vet.
Multiple matings
If she was bred more than once, enter the first and last mating dates. The window then runs from first mating + 58 days to last mating + 68 days, and the estimate sits in the middle. Matings more than about two weeks apart are unlikely to belong to the same heat.
How accurate is a dog due date calculator?
Accuracy depends entirely on the date you enter. Breeding dates and conception dates do not line up closely, so a mating-based estimate can be off by several days. Hormone-timed dates predict whelping within about a day in most dogs.
Dog due date accuracy by reference date (AKC, Merck, IVIS)
| Date you know | Days to add | Due-date range | Accuracy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ovulation (progesterone-confirmed) | 63 | 62–64 days | High (about ±1 day) |
| LH surge | 65 | 64–66 days | High (about ±1 day) |
| Initial progesterone rise | 65 | 64–66 days | High (about ±1 day) |
| Single mating date | 63 | 58–68 days (full normal range 58–72) | Moderate (about ±5 days) |
| Several mating dates | 63 from the midpoint | First mating + 58 to last mating + 68 | Lower |
- Want a precise date? Ask your vet about progesterone testing during the next heat. It is the most reliable way to time breeding and due dates.
- Already pregnant? Ultrasound measurements and an X-ray in late pregnancy help your vet refine the estimate.
- Planning a C-section? Ovulation timing matters, because puppies delivered too early may not survive.
Dog pregnancy week by week (with pictures)
Here is what happens in each of the nine weeks of dog pregnancy, the signs you may notice, and what to do. After you calculate, each week shows your dog’s actual dates and the current week is highlighted.

Week 1 (Days 1–7): Fertilization
Eggs released at ovulation mature for 2–3 days before they can be fertilized. Fertilization happens in the oviducts, and the embryos begin dividing.
Signs and symptoms
- No visible signs
- Behavior and appetite usually unchanged
What to do
- Write down every mating date (and any progesterone or LH test dates)
- Keep her normal diet and exercise routine
- Avoid new medications, flea products or vaccines without asking your vet

Week 2 (Days 8–14): Embryos travel to the uterus
Embryos move down from the oviducts into the uterus and spread out along both uterine horns before implanting.
Signs and symptoms
- Still no reliable signs
- Some dogs seem a little calmer or more affectionate
What to do
- Book a pregnancy confirmation appointment for weeks 4–5
- Keep her away from other dogs that may be unwell

Week 3 (Days 15–21): Implantation
Embryos implant in the uterine wall (around days 16–20 from ovulation) and placentas begin to form.
Signs and symptoms
- Possible mild tiredness
- Slight change in appetite in some dogs
What to do
- Continue normal, gentle exercise
- Do not increase food yet unless your vet advises it
Vet checkpoint: From about day 21, an experienced vet may feel early fetal swellings by palpation.

Week 4 (Days 22–28): Organs form; heartbeats appear
The spine, eyes and major organs start forming. Fetal heartbeats become visible on ultrasound.
Signs and symptoms
- Nipples may look pinker and slightly larger
- Short-lived reduced appetite or vomiting (“morning sickness”) in some dogs
- Clear, odorless vulvar discharge can appear
What to do
- Keep her routine calm
- Avoid rough play, jumping and strenuous exercise
Vet checkpoint: Ultrasound from about day 25 confirms pregnancy and heartbeats (puppy counts are unreliable).

Week 5 (Days 29–35): Fetal stage begins
Embryos are now fetuses. They gain weight quickly and their toes, claws and whiskers develop.
Signs and symptoms
- Weight gain begins
- Belly starts to look fuller and firmer
- Appetite often increases
What to do
- Ask your vet when and how to start increasing her food (energy needs rise in the last third)
- Weigh her weekly to track gain
Vet checkpoint: A relaxin blood test (around days 30–35) can confirm pregnancy.

Week 6 (Days 36–42): Coat and markings develop
Puppies develop their coat color and markings, and their skeletons begin to harden.
Signs and symptoms
- Clearly larger abdomen
- Nipples darker and more prominent
- Increased hunger
What to do
- Switch gradually to the diet your vet recommends for late pregnancy
- Offer smaller, more frequent meals if she eats less at a time

Week 7 (Days 43–49): Skeletons mineralize
Fetal skeletons mineralize and become visible on X-ray from about day 45.
Signs and symptoms
- Belly hair may thin
- Mammary glands enlarge
- She tires more easily
What to do
- Set up a whelping box in a quiet, warm room and let her sleep in it
- Gather supplies: clean towels, a heat source, scale, and your vet’s emergency number
Vet checkpoint: X-rays from about day 45 can confirm pregnancy.

Week 8 (Days 50–56): Puppies move; nesting starts
Puppies are nearly fully formed and you may see or feel them move when she rests.
Signs and symptoms
- Visible puppy movement
- Nesting and restlessness
- Milk may appear in the last days
What to do
- Start checking her rectal temperature twice daily from about day 56
- Trim long hair around the vulva and nipples if your vet recommends it
Vet checkpoint: An X-ray from about day 55 gives the most reliable puppy count.

Week 9 (Days 57–63+): Whelping week
Puppies are ready for birth. Final lung maturation happens in the last few days.
Signs and symptoms
- Rectal temperature drops below about 99°F (37.2°C) — labor usually follows within roughly 24 hours
- Loss of appetite, panting, shivering, digging and nesting
What to do
- Stay close and keep the whelping area quiet
- Note the time each puppy is born and check that each placenta passes
Vet checkpoint: Call your vet for strong straining over 30–60 minutes without a puppy, green discharge before the first puppy, more than 2 hours between puppies, or no labor by the vet-check date in your results.
Dog pregnancy signs and symptoms by week
Early pregnancy signs are subtle, and none of them prove a dog is pregnant. Hormonal changes after every heat can cause a convincing false pregnancy, so ask your vet to confirm.
Dog pregnancy week by week (days counted from ovulation or mating)
| Week | Days | What is happening | Signs you may notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | 1–7 | Fertilization | No visible signs |
| Week 2 | 8–14 | Embryos travel to the uterus | Still no reliable signs |
| Week 3 | 15–21 | Implantation | Possible mild tiredness |
| Week 4 | 22–28 | Organs form; heartbeats appear | Nipples may look pinker and slightly larger |
| Week 5 | 29–35 | Fetal stage begins | Weight gain begins |
| Week 6 | 36–42 | Coat and markings develop | Clearly larger abdomen |
| Week 7 | 43–49 | Skeletons mineralize | Belly hair may thin |
| Week 8 | 50–56 | Puppies move; nesting starts | Visible puppy movement |
| Week 9 | 57–63+ | Whelping week | Rectal temperature drops below about 99°F (37.2°C) — labor usually follows within roughly 24 hours |
Dog pregnancy timeline and vet milestones
No home test reliably confirms dog pregnancy. These are the usual veterinary checkpoints and preparation steps. Your calculator results turn them into calendar dates.
Dog pregnancy timeline: veterinary checkpoints and preparation (days from ovulation or mating)
| Day | Milestone | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| ~21–28 | Abdominal palpation | An experienced vet may feel early fetal swellings |
| ~25–35 | Ultrasound | Confirms pregnancy and heartbeats; puppy counts are unreliable |
| ~30–35 | Relaxin blood test | Confirms pregnancy with a hormone made by the placenta |
| ~45+ | X-ray (skeletons visible) | Confirms pregnancy once fetal bones mineralize |
| ~49–56 | Whelping box set-up | Gives her time to settle in before labor |
| ~55+ | X-ray puppy count | Tells you how many puppies to expect, so you know when birth is complete |
| ~56+ | Rectal temperature checks | A drop below about 99°F (37.2°C) usually means labor within ~24 hours |
| 58–68 | Whelping window (from mating) | Most dogs give birth in this range; day 63 is the central estimate |
| 70 | Vet check if no labor (from mating) | Overdue puppies can become distressed |
Preparing for whelping
Get ready in the last two to three weeks of pregnancy:
- Whelping box: set it up in a quiet, warm room by about day 49 and let her sleep in it
- Supplies: clean towels, a heat source, puppy scale, notebook, and your vet’s emergency number
- Temperature: check her rectal temperature twice daily from about day 56; a drop below about 99°F (37.2°C) usually means labor within roughly 24 hours (Merck)
- Labor stage 1: restlessness, panting, shivering, digging and refusing food, often for 6–12 hours
- Labor stage 2: puppies are delivered, usually 30–60 minutes apart, each followed by its placenta

How this calculator works (methodology)
The calculator uses published veterinary day counts, not breed-specific guesses. All dates are calculated in your browser and nothing is stored.
- Mating: due day 63; most likely window days 58–68; full normal range 58–72 (AKC, Merck)
- Ovulation: due day 63; window days 62–64 (AKC, IVIS)
- LH surge / progesterone rise: due day 65; window days 64–66 (Merck, IVIS)
- Vet check: day 70 after mating, or more than 2 days past a hormone-timed due date (Clinical Theriogenology)
- Breed: used only for care notes. Studies report small breed differences (shorter in German Shepherds, some hounds and Cavaliers; longer in West Highland White Terriers), but not enough to adjust a due date reliably.
Frequently asked questions
How many days are dogs pregnant?+
About 63 days from ovulation, or roughly 9 weeks. Counted from the mating date, normal pregnancies last 58 to 68 days in most dogs and up to 72 days in some.
Can a dog give birth before 63 days?+
Yes. Day 63 is only the central estimate. From a mating date, birth from day 58 onward is normal. Puppies born much earlier may be premature, so contact your vet if labor starts before day 57.
Can I calculate a dog's due date from the last mating?+
Yes, but the first mating matters too. Enter both dates in the calculator: the window runs from the first mating + 58 days to the last mating + 68 days, because any mating could have led to conception.
Does gestation length vary by breed?+
Only slightly. Studies report a day or two shorter in German Shepherds, some hounds and Cavaliers, and longer in West Highland White Terriers. Litter size also matters a little. The date you count from matters far more, so the calculator does not adjust for breed.
How can a veterinarian confirm pregnancy?+
By palpation from about day 21–28, ultrasound from about day 25, a relaxin blood test from about day 30, or X-rays from about day 45. An X-ray from day 55 gives the most reliable puppy count.
When should I contact a vet if my dog has not given birth?+
If there is no labor by day 70 after mating, or more than 2 days after an ovulation-timed due date. Call immediately for strong straining over 30–60 minutes without a puppy or green discharge before the first puppy.
How accurate is a dog pregnancy calculator?+
It depends on the date you enter. With a vet-confirmed ovulation or LH surge date, it is usually accurate to about a day. With a single mating date, expect about ±5 days, because conception can happen days after mating.
What are the signs of dog pregnancy week by week?+
Weeks 1–3 usually show no signs. In week 4 nipples may turn pinker and some dogs eat less. From week 5 the belly enlarges and appetite rises. Weeks 7–8 bring mammary growth, puppy movement and nesting. In week 9, temperature drops before labor.
Is this dog pregnancy calculator free?+
Yes. The calculator, week-by-week guide, PDF printout and calendar file are free, with no sign-up. Calculations run in your browser and your dates are not stored.
Can I download a dog pregnancy calendar as a PDF?+
Yes. After calculating, tap Download PDF / Print and choose Save as PDF. The printout includes your due date, whelping window, milestones and week-by-week pictures with dates.
